Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata undergoes groin surgery

Manchester United have announced midfielder Juan Mata has undergone surgery on a groin injury.

Mata is United's second leading scorer this season behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 10 goals.

His absence comes at the worst possible time for Jose Mourinho with United facing nine games in April as they seek to break into the top four and continue their Europa League campaign.

A club statement said: "Juan has had surgery for a groin injury. Further updates on his recovery will follow in due course."
